Spaniards out in first round of U.S. Open

It was not really a surprise to see 3rd seeds Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez go out in the first round of the U.S. Open. Martinez Sanchez hurt her knee earlier in the season, and the team hasn't had much match play. Nevertheless, after last year's very impressive run, ending in a Sony Ericsson Championships title (including the defeat of both Black and Huber and the Williams sisters), the loss had to be a disappointment to them. Llagostera Vives and Martinez Sanchez were defeated 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 by Alexandra Dulgheru and Magdalena Rybarikova.

There was a possibility that Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Liezel Huber would form a team for the U.S. Open, but Mattek-Sands is playing with Meghann Shaughnessy, and Huber is playing with Nadia Petrova. Both teams advanced to the second round today.
