Petrova defeats Williams in Beijing

Hitting fourteen aces, Nadia Petrova--seeded 13th--made her way past 2nd seed Serena Williams in the third round of the China Open today, defeating the 2nd seed 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.

In another close match that had some twists and turns toward the end, 7th seed Vera Zvonareva defeated 10th seed Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.

In doubles, number 1 seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber were defeated in the quarterfinals by Alisa Kleybanova and Francesca Schiavone, 3-6, 7-6, 11-9. This is the second week in a row that Kleybanova and Schiavone have beaten Black and Huber. Also upset were the 4th seeds, Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, who were defeated by Alla Kudryavtseva and Ekaterina Makarova.

Elena Dementieva vs. Agnieszka Radwanska
Svetlana Kuznetsova vs. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
Peng Shuai vs. Nadia Petrova

Pavlyuchenkova and Peng are unseeded.
